miHoYo (Chinese: 米哈游 Mǐhāyóu) is a Chinese video game development and publishing studio based in Shanghai, China. The company is known for creating various gacha games, including the Honkai series, Genshin Impact, and Zenless Zone Zero.
In addition to games, miHoYo has created a variety of other products including animations, comics, music, novels, and merchandise. The original music for miHoYo's media is produced by its own music studio, HOYO-MiX, led by music director Cai Jinhan (蔡近翰).
Since February 2022, miHoYo's subsidiary Cognosphere Pte. Ltd. d/b/a HoYoverse is responsible for all of the company's global operations outside of the Chinese Mainland.
History
miHoYo was founded in 2011 (as miHoYo Studio) by three computer science students from Shanghai Jiao Tong University: Cai Haoyu (蔡浩宇), Liu Wei (刘伟), and Luo Yuhao (罗宇皓). The three shared an interest for technology and ACG (abbreviation of "anime, comics, and games") culture. Zhang Qinghua (张庆华), also known as CiCi, joined the group as an undergraduate student as an artist. Chen Tianwen (陈天文) also joined as the company's first programmer.[1]

- On September 28, 2011, FlyMe2theMoon was released as miHoYo's first title as an indie developer.
- On February 13, 2012, miHoYo Co., Ltd. was registered.
- In late 2012, Zombiegal Kawaii (Houkai Gakuen) was released.
- In early 2014, Guns Girl Z (Houkai Gakuen 2) was released.
- Development of Honkai Impact 3rd began in the summer of 2014.[2]
- On October 14, 2016, Honkai Impact 3rd was released in China. It became the first miHoYo game released worldwide, with global servers opened from February 2017 to March 2018.
- In June 2019, Genshin Impact was announced.
- In July 2019, Tears of Themis was announced.
- On July 30, 2020, Tears of Themis was released in China.
- On August 4, 2020, N0va Desktop was released on PC.
- On September 28, 2020, Genshin Impact was released worldwide.
- On December 1, 2020, N0va Desktop was released on Android.
- On July 29, 2021, Tears of Themis was released worldwide.
- On October 5, 2021, Honkai: Star Rail was announced.
- On February 14, 2022, the HoYoverse brand was unveiled as the trade name of Cognosphere and all of miHoYo's operations outside of Mainland China were moved under this brand.[3]
- On May 13, 2022, Zenless Zone Zero was announced.
- On April 26, 2023, Honkai: Star Rail was released worldwide.
- On July 4, 2024, Zenless Zone Zero was released worldwide.
- On May 3, 2025, Honkai: Nexus Anima was teased at the end of Star Rail LIVE 2025.
- On August 29, 2025, Honkai: Nexus Anima was officially announced.

Trivia
- Liu Wei personally explained the origin of the name miHoYo at the 2019 campus recruitment of Zhejiang University.[4]
- H and Y are the initials of the names of two of the co-founders, Cai Haoyu and Luo Yuhao.
- HoYo is due to the idea that popular companies use two of the letter "O" (e.g. Google, Microsoft, Facebook).
- mi was added due to HoYo already being registered, borrowing from the name Hatsune Miku.
