The company is known for creating various ''{{w|Gacha game|gacha}}'' games, including the ''{{w|Honkai}}'' series, ''{{w|Genshin Impact}}'', and ''{{w|Zenless Zone Zero}}''.

In addition to games, miHoYo has created a variety of other products including animations, comics, music, novels, and merchandise. The original music for miHoYo's media is produced by its own music studio, {{w|HOYO-MiX}}, led by music director Cai Jinhan ({{zh|蔡近翰}}).

Since February 2022, miHoYo's subsidiary '''Cognosphere Pte. Ltd.''' d/b/a '''HoYoverse''' is responsible for all of the company's global operations outside of the Chinese Mainland.

miHoYo was founded in 2011 (as miHoYo Studio) by three computer science students from {{w|Shanghai Jiao Tong University}}: {{w|Cai Haoyu}} ({{zh|蔡浩宇}}), {{w|Liu Wei (businessman, born 1987)|Liu Wei}} ({{zh|刘伟}}), and Luo Yuhao ({{zh|罗宇皓}}). The three shared an interest for technology and ACG (abbreviation of "anime, comics, and games") culture. Zhang Qinghua ({{zh|张庆华}}), also known as CiCi, joined the group as an undergraduate student as an artist.
